About SSTI

SSTI is a national, nonprofit organization that leads, supports and strengthens efforts to improve state and regional economies through science, technology and innovation. As the most comprehensive resource available for those involved in technology-based economic development, SSTI offers the information and services that are needed to help build innovation economies.

With more than 170 members, SSTI serves as the resource center and voice for the tech-based economic development community. Members range from state economic development departments to groups working with entrepreneurs and startups, from university offices of economic development to local economic develoment organizations, from incubators to research parks, from federal laboratories to research centers. In short, SSTI serves as the home for everyone who is trying to encourage economic growth through science, technology, and innovation.

Since its founding, SSTI has offered services and conducted research to benefit the tech-based economic development community, including:

  • Publication of the SSTI Weekly Digest, an electronic newsletter with the week's most important news for the tech-based economic development community
  • Authorship of A Resource Guide for Technology-based Economic Development that captured the wisdom of more than 60 nationally-known practitioners
  • Sponsorship of the Excellence in TBED Awards, a highly competitive program to recognize exceptional achievement in six areas of tech-based economic development
  • Advocacy for the tech-based economic development community with Congress, state legislatures, governors and federal agencies
  • Facilitating connections between federal agencies and tech-based economic development programs at the state, local, and university level
  • Special alerts to members on new developments at the federal level that impact tech-based economic development programs
  • A web-based inventory of more than 2,000 publicly supported programs and initiatives that technology entrepreneurs can take advantage of
  • Fourteen annual conferences that bring the community together to learn from each other and plan for the future
